My Deaf School!

  1. Dan - DS are still the best live band ever so don't miss the upcoming shows next month

  2. For years the search engines turned up nothing for DS... then I find I've been missing all the fun! How long have I been waiting to be able to replace my crackly played-to-death vinyl with cds? At last! Saw DS twice at Essex Uni in the 70s and have great memories of the classy shows. Got backstage and pestered everyone for autographs. Still got them and a few photos I took. Some things you just can't part with. It's brilliant that they're back and their music can be heard again. Damn, they were good!

  3. Come on all you Deafsters, Deaf School are appearing at the Fordham Festival this year, an open air Festival with plenty of very good bands appearing, all profits go to Charity, for tickets or info contact me on 01449-737722 or go to the Fordham Festival site, I would love to see plenty of Deaf School Fans also making an appearance, give it up for Deaf School, Bob Payne

  4. Thanks Ray,we've also booked for the Friday show.

  5. i love scotland, although i only come up once a year on my golf holiday.i would defo travel up for a ds gig,if not maybe carlisle or blackpool but scotland would be great

  6. I've used We got tickets for other gigs at the Dublin Castle, and for the Friday one in August. You print yout ticket reference out and take it with you, no problems.

  7. Trying to buy tickets for Dublin Castle, can only find them through "we got tickets" has anybody used them before ? are they reliable?

  8. ANY NEWS ON ANY GIGS LATER IN YEAR !

ANY CHANCE THE SCHOOLERS WILL COME UP TO SCOTLAND OR AT LEAST THE LAKES !

  9. Hey there - A few of us will going down to The Notting Hill Arts Club wednesday to see Eighteen Nightmares At The Lux (ft Enrico Jnr jnr on drums) and a cracking young bunch of rock & rollers they are with not a few DS-isms in their quirky burlesque rock & fuzzabilly sound..something like 'Rat Scabies drumming with Roxy Music' according to Death Disco DJ Danny Watson! Free entry onstage 11:00pm. Good support too.

  10. dublin castle dates great are liverpool dates to follow ????

    cheers steve

  13. Thanks Enrico

  14. The name of our lovely young drummer is Nicholas 'Stix' Millard formerly of Crackout. He also drums with The Kooks and Vanessa & The O's on occasion and a very nice young chap he is..by the cut of his jib he was born to be in Deaf School!

  15. Hi Jo hi. What is the name of DS drummer?

  16. All gone very quiet on the festival front.... anyone going? Was hoping the suggestion from SteveEverton of a School Bus Trip would have provoked more interest.

  22. Hi everyone Ive been looking at the cost of a coach to cambridge 7 aug. WE could depart lpool @ 9.00 And get to festival @ 12.30 ish leave after final act and get back to lpool 3.5 hours later. Cost is approx 25.00 per person a bit cheaper if we can sell out a 52 seater. If your seriously interested send me an email via the site. I would like to collect all the money in advance and make a firm booking so be quick. If we can get a full coach I might be able to approach the festival people for a block booking. Only people who want to have a good time, sing, dance and generally have fun should apply best wishes to all steve

  24. Great idea by Kathy about any organised trips to the fordham fest to see the band. Anyone else interested? Anyone fancy organising one?

  25. In answer to DAN'S question about the drumbeats missing from the opening of English Boys/Working Girls on every released version subsequent to the original vinyl:

First of all Dan, well spotted!!! I scratched my head over it briefly without solution, subsequent to which Enrico scratched his head at length before he consulted Sir Cliff and Avo; considerable further headscratching ensued before a conclusion was reached. Their thoughts:

Avo - "I reckon a CD mastering engineer thought the drum beats were some sort of count-in and clipped them off. Makes the vinyl more valuable!"

Sir Cliff - "It must have happened when the Japanese CD was made and went unnoticed. May be they're not keen on drums over there! And the Brits must have thought highly of the quality of the Japanese cut and copied their CDs from them not bothering to check the vinyl. And none of us noticed!!"

Enrico - "There you go -I think that's it, Japanese mastering engineer lopped them off ....Aiiiiiii.Banzai! for the first Japanese release and those masters have been used since then for the Sanctuary and Cherry red releases..as Avo points out that makes the vinyl more valuable!"

So, Dan, there we have it. Once again, thanks for spotting it. This demonstrates the wonders of the web - the whole thing was raised, considered, resolved and resolution communicated in double-quick time without a conversation taking place. Now. all we have to do is check with Zen, our Japanese fan from Tokyo who came to last year's London gigs, whether he can explain why a Japanese engineer might have done that - over to you Zen!!!

  26. any organised trips to the fordham fest to see the band

    would be interested in attending

    thanks

  27. thats brilliant,cheers

  28. Hi all - song lyrics are on the development schedule! First up will be Survivor Song and Enrico's Song, followed by all the LP lyrics. We'll get to it as soon as we can!

  33. Deaf School have kindly agreed to appear at the Fordham Festival, nr Newmarket, Suffolk on the 7th August. For those of you that did not receive a Flyer from me on Saturday night all the Info is on the DS home page or you can email me at robertpayne@fsmail.net (Any Pics from Saturday would be appreciated), or you can look at the Fordham Festival site at fordhammusicfest.org This is a Charity based Festival and apart from Deaf School there are some really good bands appearing, why not make a weekend of it

  34. Quick question: I have three versions of the DS cds (the 1989 Japanese, the Anthology, and the new ones). Odd, but none of these has the opening drumbeats on EB/WG that appeared on the original vinyl. Anyone know why??

  35. What can I say.................

Came from Edinburgh - took my brother as a treat, he didn't know he was going. We've been ardent followers for 35 years but never seen DS live!((.

Saw both shows..........stageside seats for the early..............then sat next to Bill, Sam's brother-in-law, in row H (a LOVELY chap who was great and happy to talk - great to meet you Bill; and thank you)..........and my brother had a wee chat with Mike McCartney..as you do!!!!

And as for the gigs: UTTERLY AWESOME. I can still hardly speak!

You all did magnificently and we were blown away by Liverpool's generosity and kindness. Roll on August; keep up the good work

    THANKS

    Nigel (and Chris) -))))))

  36. Hi gdleb, great to speak witth you ,thanks for all your help in acquiring the said medium t-shirt,sorry if we seemed a little worse for wear, but our afternoon started about 3pm,never the less a truly great day, hope to see you at a future DS gig.

    John & Jean

  37. What a great night and what a fantastic tribute to Sam.

Brilliant band, brilliant fans and brilliant guests.

Good to meet so many Deafsters at both shows.

Can't wait for the next one.........

  38. not having much luck! Just have to copy and paste!

  39. Sorry, link not working, try this one.

  40. Two great shows, one great night. A fitting tribute, enjoy the pictures.

  41. I was one of the magnificent 7 and totally agree with ernie (hurty) had a superb night; (nearly as good as our win over spurs)

    Brian

  42. Thanks for a fab night,we were at the 7pm show and WOW; then just read the comments for the second show; WOWEE; To here our 12 year old son singing DS songs in the shower is one way of keeping these songs going for ever; they are all classics; great to hear 2 new ones also; pass it on. karen

  43. Another unbelievable show from DS (and special guests). The 7 of us drove up from Portsmouth on Saturday morning and had cabaret tables for the late show, and what a night we had. Impossible for me to pick out specific highlights but from the moment Enrico appeared in the audience to the final encores - what a show. Chatted to Sir Cliffs daughter and cousin afterwards - so cool about eveything and really nice- just topped off an unforgetable evening.

    Can't wait until next time

  44. Hi there. I had the pleasure of being the duty house manager at the Everyman on Saturday night and just wanted to thank Deaf School for another two fantastic shows - I could get used to this! Also, special thanks to the audiences for keeping me busy all evening... and if the licensing inspector's reading this: What stage storming? I didn't see any stage storming... Keep up the good work - hope to see the band again soon. x

  45. Sorry but was name of the support cos I thought he was great!

  46. Enrico we certainly did scale new heights. Still in a state of euphoria here 'Yous are the best' . I luv yous, and we luv yous.

  47. I wouldn't fancy getting up at 6.20am every Saturday to catch a ferry from Dublin to Holyhead, but I'm so glad I did it this weekend. What a magical night! I'd seen DS a number of times before but I was told in advance that the Everyman would be something special, and so it was. I did feel a bit underdressed by not having a 'kerchief to hand to join in with Enrico, but that's my own fault and I'll know better next time. Until then, best wishes and much thanks to everyone involved....

  48. Have uploaded my photos on face book don't know how to do it here!!!

  49. Hey amigo's!

Once more a big thank you for being there for Sam and for being such a fantastic audience..yet again! With the help of you and our very special guests we really did scale new heights on the second show, simply fabulous, an emotional tribute and celebration of Sam indeed!

    x

  50. ps... Stephen Everton would like to take this opportunity to also thank you for the loan of the Hankie and the other bit of memorabilia!!!! it was much appreciated.

    Gary..."Cocktails at 8" tshirt. gdleb@yahoo.com

  51. Fancy me..at 50...being dragged off the stage by bouncers!!!! Pure magic. Thanks to the band for kicking back the decades, once again last night. Thanks also to the folks who rocked along with me ..The wicked STEPHENEVERTON and his wife...the delightful Working Girls TShirt "twins" and the countless other devotees who brought the 2nd house to its feet.

Hi also to: "Jean " aka john-jean who I had the privilege of sharing some banter with over a Medium sized Deaf School TShirt !!!

  53. Unbelievable ,I thought the first show was great

but then the 2nd show was taken to a completely

different level, it totally blew the 1st show away.

All the special guests were superb Suggs,Lee,Ian,Kevin and then Wylie why is this man not playing live gigs on a more regular basis, what a fantastic night,

great to see Enrico in Ye Cracke before the show.

The video's that are on You Tube already are superb well done to whichway.

The Everyman really suits Deaf School ,hopefully we will get the chance to see them there again in the future, many thanks to everyone involved in putting this show together, your efforts were well appreciated.

  54. 35 Years have now passed since I was first exposed to Deaf School, all them years ago it felt liked I had been hit by a Tycoon, last nights Tribute to Sam had the same effect, there are not many bands that can do that. Kevin Rowland & Ian Broudie's contribution was exceptionally outstanding as were all the other Guest appearances. Deaf School are a Down to Earth Honest Band that get totally involved with their fans. I'm sure Sam would be proud of last nights performance both on & off the stage. Long live Deaf School, Great Band & Great Fans. Thanx to Ken and all the Band for a Great Night.

  56. What a superb night. Totally brilliant. Thanks to all concerned. For all Deafsters- the Eric Shark EP is on iTunes NOW!!

  57. Last night's show was fantastic. I am a Madness fan first and foremost so I went along to see Suggs and Thommo initially but came away a convert to the Deaf School sound. The atmosphere was tremendous and everyone gave their all. Fantastic. Much love to everyone involved. xx

  58. Extraordinary. Wonderful to see such a class performance from a gang of octagenarians. It's almost unfair to single out anyone as being particularly notable Enrico, so I won't.

A hugely romantic dance in the back row during Final Act; what a way to end it all!

  59. Best night ever for me. So sad but sam to me was there!

  60. Tickets in pocket. Hawaiian shirt packed. Smile on face.

We're on our way to see Deaf School! Looking forward to a great night

    See you all in there!

  61. One ticket for 9.30 show going spare if anyone wants it. 07956102608.

  62. Roll on a great night! I'd better get to bed, though - gotta to be up at 6.30 to catch the ferry from Dublin and then the train from Holyhead after the volcano action scuppered the original arrangements. Oh, and then back to Liverpool Central for the 10.15am train on Sunday - that certainly wasn't part of the plan! Can't wait, though.....

  63. marcus there are such things as trains. Be there or be square! Don't miss the best nite of u life. I have had many since DS back togetherxxxxxxxxxxxx

  64. What a great surprise to find this website!!!!

Deaf School was a very important part of my adolescent years and I have kept the faith ever since, wearing out my vinyl copies of all three albums and despairing of ever being able to replace them...til now!

I saw DS back live around 1977 at Southampton University..there was a delay and the band didnt hit the stage until after midnight..I was there early and waited for hours in the corridoor next to the entrance and didnt realise the sexy lady walking past me in the leopard leotard was one Ms Bright...curses I would have liked to say hello!

It was a sublime set and I had a blast, then had to walk home the 15 miles or so. My date was a lovely girl I had fancied for some time..it didnt work out but we had a fun evening and it was very shocking in those days not to get her home until the early hours (at 15, yikes!)...it was well worth it to be able to say I saw Deaf School lIve...Thanks to you all..fond memories and you still move me today. Cheers, wish I could get to the concert...are you coming to play the Engine Shed in Lincoln any time?????

  65. Will Uncle Ken be asking us to behave ourself and not dance again on Satuday night? I think we should be told!

    Peter P

  66. Hi Enrico Jrs by wetherspoons (old blacklers building) hope to see you there, got a pint waiting for you

    cheers steve

Ps if you cant make it Ill have to drink it.

  67. The Mighty Wylie la will indeed be playing JJ.

  68. Which pub is game on Steve?

  69. There are 2 tickets on Sale for the late show on Ebay at the moment, be quick

  70. Ive still got one spare ticket for late show on sat anybody want it 22.00 its possible that I could make it a pair if required.

    cheers steve

  71. Is Pete Wylie still appearing on Sat?

  72. I've done the 500 mile round trip to Liverpool 2 times in the last couple of years. Roll on Saturday to make it 1500 miles in my old banger to see the mighty Deaf School and meet up with fellow Deafsters I've met along the way :-)

  73. Secretly booked tickets for both shows fully aware that I should be in Wales on a family holiday. Wife not too pleased to find she will be travelling without me, but you would think that after these years, she would know where my priorities lie!!!!

Its gonna be a night to remember, with classic Sharkie tracks being resurrected again. We are gonna shake some serious action and bring the house down for Eric. See you all there.

  74. Not long now - God, I'm excited! Four of us coming from Dublin. Hotel sorted, cabaret seats for the 9.30 show sorted, Ryanair boarding passes printed out....all we need to do now is make it to the airport on time. TAXI!

  75. I'm finally back with email access - and really looking forward to Saturdays gigs. Front row cabaret tables for the late show - how cool is that?

The band rehersal blogs sound great, disfunctional yes, but when did DS ever do anything 'normal'?

4 days to go and counting.......................................

  76. Havent had the internet for ages just logged on to see the terrible news about Eric knew he was ill but still a shame also am gutted to see the liverpool gigs coming up and I cant make it I am gigging myself but have read Clives blog and would love to help out on drums on the friday rehearsal would be a dream come true. I was at the Dublin Castle last year and enjoyed Deaf Schools warm friendship and great music but had to leave two songs before the end for the last tube so couldnt thank them. I took video of some songs and even the soundcheck but even though the pictures fine the sound is all distorted I will never use a mobile to video again. When i talked to Ian Broudie I forgot to mention all the great records I had with his guitar/production such as Original Mirrors, Pale Fountains, Shack and even Care ! I think Suggs is sick of seeing me drunk and hows this for a coincidence I bumped into the drummer two days later in greenwich think I surprised him by recognising him ! I hope the liverpool gigs go well and Eric is celebrated I'll raise a drink on the night all the best hope to see you all again sometime soon.

    Gonna be a great night.

  89. I went for one of cabaret tables too. Saw two great DS shows last year (The Garage and the O2 Academy), but I'm told the gigs at the Everyman - which I've never been to - were even better, great setting etc. Really looking forward to it....

  95. phoned everyman on wednesday, the guy didn't know and also wouldn't confirm the gig,but believes it will go ahead but not sure if its one gig or two.

  96. Any word on when the Everyman tix are going on sale??

  97. this is the best band to walk this planet.....

  98. Hurtie - never fear - it all definitely sounds like Deaf School and absolutely stands up against the old classics - the new songs are new classics! See my report in the Hi Jo Hi Forum at Capaldi's Cafe!

  99. Great news about the new songs, I am sure Sam would be proud. Good Bye To All That should be the new single, it makes the hairs on my neck tingle and proves why Deaf School are a timeless force of musical excellence! Release it now ! 52.000 hits on the site and 2.000 in the last couple of days. I feel a number 1 calling

    Nigel

  100. I hope so Hurtie...certainly gonna try! Also recording Goodbye To All That, it had to be done!
